Results get rewarded...(period)

Lets take off the HR hat for a minute...
I tell my MBA students all the time...It's the results that matter.
As Bill Parcell's has frequently pointed out: "You don't get any medal for trying something, you get medals for results." He has also pointed out you are as good as your record...
Showing up is meaningless in business...no one cares how hard you tried...

A shocking revelation to most Gen Y'rs who have grown up with participation trophies and pizza parties after losing in sports or school competitions...

It's nice to say, you tried your best and you should get something for it...lots of HR folks (including myself)...think this. Many even act on it, but do we have it wrong?
Should a student get an A for effort???
Is winning the only thing that matters? If not why do we give grades and keep scores?
